Monthly Recap

This month, Marjan Kamali’s The Stationary Shop continued to be our bestselling title; it has been since we opened our doors in November! Our best of 2024 display proved to be popular as well: we already restocked James by Percival Eliott and Catalina by Karla Cornejo Villavincencio this month!

We were so thrilled to be featured on Houston Life on January 3rd. Co-owner Chris Hysinger was able to discuss Good on Paper’s mission, aspirations, and excitement to be able to interact with and serve our community. Chris mentioned some of the year’s most anticipated releases, so be sure to check his interview out!

Good on Paper participated in 19th Street’s iconic White Tent Sale on January 18th. It was great to see so many new faces, and spend some time setting up outside before the cold set in! Not that we’re complaining–winter weather makes for the coziest reading sessions.

The week of January 20th kept us busy: two storms were brewing! In addition to Tuesday’s historic snow day, Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm made its exciting debut! Seeing our customers shop local for such a popular title was so special. Thank you all so much!

Community Impact

Good on Paper rang in the new year with a guided bird walk! This event was hosted by Land Sea & Sky on January 5th. That day, 10% of all proceeds went to Houston Audubon. Despite a drizzle of rain, this birdwatching event was a success!

On January 19th, Good on Paper launched its children’s storytime, Little Listeners, with a reading of Martin Luther King Jr. A Peaceful Leader for an early celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Our bookseller Michelle, a former children’s librarian, peppered in additional facts about Dr. King’s life and led a great storytime while raising awareness about a fearless American leader.

Also present at Little Listeners was Cassie Manley, who introduced the event with a few words about the significance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s actions. Good on Paper teamed up with Cassie on an MLK Day Weekend of Service book drive, collecting children’s and YA books centering around BIPOC characters to donate to the Houston Public Library. We received so many donations, and are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to this mission.
